Panic sets in as they realize he's tracking them, somehow finding them impossibly fast. With mere seconds before he arrives, the narrator struggles to focus and concentrate, fingers digging desperately into the dirt. Despite their careful precautions, time is running out. They force themselves to slow their breathing and hunker down, clinging to the slim hope that they might still have a chance to escape or hide before the wolf reaches them.
