Ofor is Upstanding Novel

In Ezzum, a community's contentment is disrupted when local authorities introduce new customs that trouble the elders, who view the system as dishonest. Obiageli particularly laments the practice of requiring repayment from those who receive aid in ignorance, contrasting it with the fairness of earlier times. While young people embrace the changes, the community worries about maintaining dignity. Some women, like Ngozi Njoku and Nkoli, preserve their honor, but Obiageli loses hers to fear, and Ijeoma, despite her hard work and respect for tradition, falls victim to forces beyond her control. Nwanyikwele attempts intervention when Nwosu refuses guidance, but her efforts fail as past rejection haunts him. When the local authority visits seeking thumbprints in exchange for promised benefits, the community initially participates. However, they soon realize the Chairman needs these thumbprints for political power. Resolved to resist, the people face new turmoil when rumors spread about a captured masquerade requiring retrieval from headquarters. During this crisis, the local authorities seize the community. Ijeoma's personal shame—running from her husband's home and losing her father's name—is overshadowed by the collective misfortune, and she is ultimately taken away by a visiting stranger assessing the community's distress.
