Chapter 88

"Good thing you called. I was about to call you."

"Really? Why?"

"I'm at mother's place. Pick me from there. Okay?" She said. "Okay." I replied.

"I'll talk to you later. Bye. I love you." I said and heard her chuckle. "Bye.. I love you too." She said as she quickly cut the call. I laughed and then turned my attention to my work.

A sad smile formed on my lips while I was working as all those not so good memories of my past flashed in my mind. I married Sophie when I converted all my money into money earned with virtue, that’s what I can do for her. Only if mother was alive to see all this... the happiness of becoming a grandmother, the life she always wanted me to live.

I ran my hand in my hair as I stood up. I don't want this feeling of dejection to build inside me but whenever the image of that look of shame Sophie gave me when she told me about her rape came to my mind, I lose my senses as an arousal for revenge for that depraved deed took over me and submerge me in the swamp of revenge and wrath. I curled my hands in a fist to contain my anger but to no avail.. You will pay.

I then picked up Sophie from her home. Aunt left the mansion and shifted back to her house with Eugene. She doesn't want anything related to our contract and our marriage is not a contract anymore so Aunt decided to leave that house as well.

We were outside the cinema as I asked Sophie, "Which genre do you want?"

"No need to ask. Of course horror."

"No." I said sternly.

"Why?" She said childishly.

"What if it had a negative impact on our child?"

"Then you can erase it." She smiled as she pinched my cheek.

"Come on, let's go." She said.

"No. Sophie." I tried to say firmly but failed.

"Please." She said giving those irresistible puppy eyes. I narrowed my eyes at her for about a minute which didn’t affect her in the slightest and sighed, "Fine.." I mumbled as she hugged me and then we watched The Conjuring 2 and I have to admit, the jump scares were kinda scary, the movie was scary and she was watching them unaffected and with so much attention. She loved it.

After the move she stretched smiling widely, "Ah, it was great. But it wasn't scary at all. I wonder why Eugene fell from the chair while watching it." I looked at her in disbelief. "You are not scared?" I asked as she shook her head 'no'.

"Why would I? It wasn't that scary." She said. I was amazed but then a smirk appeared on my face as I got a thing to tease Eugene. It will be fun. Eugene’s and mine relation is also fine now. Well at least he now doesn't hate me like he used to.

"But I know a sentence that can scare you." smirked at her.

"What?" She asked curiously. She seemed so proud that she is not afraid at all.

"You and insects lock in a room.. together." Her smile faded as she gasped, "It's life taking." She uttered, putting a hand over her chest.

I chuckled as I said, "Don't worry. I'll save you."

"You couldn't even kill that lizard."She said, pouting. "You are still hung up on that?" I asked, amused. She shrugged her shoulders as she said, "Okay, let's forget about it."

I smiled in admiration for her cute actions and then we went home.

We were sleeping peacefully but then Sophie suddenly woke up with a loud and heavy sound of pants. I sat up and asked her worried, "What happened Sophie?" She looked at me in dread as sweat rolled down her forehead. She was shaking violently. She held my shirt as tears pricked in her eyes.

“Christian…” She called me petrified.. “Sophie.. Calm down.” I whispered, removing her hairs falling on her face and stroking her tenderly.

My heart felt torn looking at her like this. Her fears always broke me and inflicted grief in me, I cannot bear to look at her afraid anymore. She lifted her teary gaze as she looked at me terrified.

"C-Christian.. They.. they were.. I-I am so s-scared." She stutters as she broke into sobs, I wrapped my arms protectively around her as I pulled her close. I stroked her head and kissed it slightly. "Shh.. it's okay. I'm here. No one can harm you." Her tears soak my shirt as I continued to soothe her. A needle prick in my heart to see her like this. I have erased that feeling, those terrors but I couldn't obliterate these nightmares of her. She sometimes has them, she wakes up appalled and then begins to cry. Her distress gave me stress.

I continued to console her as I whispered sweet nothings to her.

"Shh... I'm here."

"Don't worry."

"There's nothing to be afraid of."

I continued to stroke her until she fell asleep. She fell asleep crying while holding my shirt. When the sound of her heartbreaking sobs calmed down, I slowly pulled away as I looked at her asleep. I bit my lips as I cursed under my breath to everyone who made her like this. I shifted her to my laps and began to run my hands in her hairs. These nightmares never leave her. I felt so grieved by this, I just know she needs me. My heart clenched whenever that look of apprehension flashed in her eyes. I just want to snatch away all the pain from her and give her happiness even mine. I am crazy for her and my heart is hers, her tears take my life out of me. Her pain is running in my body like a poison.

I then spent the rest of my night with her in my laps as I was caressing her. Trying to give her solace that I am here for her and there’s nothing to be afraid of… not anymore.
