In August 1807, in the Indiana Territory, an oppressively hot day leaves Henri desperate for relief. The stifling, still air makes even breathing a painful effort. Confined to a cot in his one-room cabin, Henri finds little comfort in the shadows as the intense heat drains his body of moisture. His skin has become parched and hot like parchment, while blisters have formed on his lips, causing them to blister and crack painfully. His body cries out for water. From where he lies against the north wall, Henri can easily see a bucket sitting on a rough wooden table across the room. The bucket contains fresh water that his daughter had fetched from the creek that very morning. Despite its proximity, the water remains just out of reach for the suffering man.
